Hey Book Lovers!!
Welcome to MARCH!
I really feel like March is women’s month. lol
International Women’s day is celebrated in March. UK, Nigeria and some other countries celebrate Mother’s day in March. And March is Women’s history month in the United States.
So, the theme for the blog this month is going to be Women ?♀️
In light of that, our Book of the Month is by one of my favorite authors, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
How do you raise your girl child to be a feminist in this day and age?
That is the question Adichie seeks to answer in Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen suggestions.
The book is Chimamanda’s letter response to a childhood friend’s inquiry about how to raise her baby girl to be a feminist.
Dear Ijeawele offers a passionate, rousing and urgent call to action for parents, and every member of the society on the importance of raising and empowering girls in our society today.
It is also a real exposé into how patriarchal social conditioning reflects, sometimes subtly, in parenting, language, actions, inactions, and how that in turn reflects in the way society views and treats girls and women.
And in true Chimamanda fashion, she presents this in a funny, sarcastic, inspiring, and easy-to-read way.
I really think it should be mandatory for everyone to read this book. If you are going to read only one book on Feminism, make it Dear Ijeawele.
This book is not only for feminists. It is for people who struggle with the feminism tag, and even people who are against the movement.
Some of my favorite quotes are from the book:
“Your feminist premise should be I matter.
I matter equally.
Not “if only”. Not “as long as”. I matter equally. Full stop.”“The knowledge of cooking does not come pre installed in a vagina” ….This one always makes me laugh ??
“Teach her that the idea of gender roles is absolutely nonsense. Do not ever tell her that she should or should not do something because she is a girl. “Because you are a girl” is never reason for anything. Ever.”
